Maritime Forest

Landward of the foredune is maritime forest. Technically part of the dune system, this coastal zone habitat has permanent vegetation with tree and understory layers.

The maritime forests along the east coast range from live oak dominated ones in northeast Florida to tropical hardwoods such as poisonwood, mastic, cabbage palm, and strangler fig in the Keys. Maritime forests in the panhandle are dominated by a scrub oak overstory and rosemary understory.
